What Is the Craftsman home style?

A Craftsman-style house refers to a residential home that took its design aspects from the Arts and Crafts movement that began in Europe during the 1800s and then moved to America from the 1850s to 1920s. During the Industrial Age, homes were mass-produced using mechanized labor. Designers and architects embraced the Arts and Crafts movement to design homes that combined handmade craftsmanship and innovative designs that could be created while not skimping on comfort or functionality.

Many architects have been credited for their influences in defining the Craftsman home design styles. Charles Greene and Henry Greene in Pasadena, California were renowned for creating the original American Bungalow Craftsman-style homes in the early 20th century. Gustav Stickley further promoted the Craftsman homes and interior design styles through his 1901 magazine, The Craftsman. Also, Frank Lloyd Wright is known for evolving the Craftsman design and creating a new Prairie house style in 1900 and 1901.

What Elements Are in Craftsman-Style Homes?

The exterior of Craftsman home plans can have abundant details. They will normally feature wood characteristics incorporated throughout, such as siding and porches, as well as brick and stone elements. You can instantly recognize a Craftsman home by its sloped, gabled roof and single dormers with spaced wide eaves along the roof.

Full front porches are a common characteristic of the Craftsman style and many will feature tapered columns. Another interesting characteristic involves the double-hung windows — now referred to as Craftsman windows. They have four or six panes along the top sash and a single pane on the bottom.

Once you step inside, you will be amazed by the simplicity of the Craftsman home interior. These homes can be very modest and modern with straight lines and a wide-open floor plan that can make the rooms feel spacious. A Craftsman home also takes advantage of every inch of space to offer maximum functionality.
